New Music: We Can’t Wait For Timi Dakolo’s “WISH ME WELL”

Timi Dakolo

Myself and Noble Igwe had a meeting with vocal powerhouse Timi Dakolo at his apartment. And he played a particular song  titled “Wish Me Well”.

Good heavens, I am totally in love with the song. Although, the song is in its post-production phase, I can’t wait for Timi Dakolo to premiere this melodious song on our platform.

The spoiler alert is this…. I heard the song again today and I was pretty much in awe.

Of course, one wouldn’t expect less from  someone like Timi whose songs have enjoyed massive airplay, not just for its melodious feel but for its rich contents in terms of beautiful songwriting.

We really do anticipate this song that is ready to send shivers down our spine!

Music Review: ‘Sisi’ By Sexy Steel Is Average And Nothing More

The opening minute misleads us, we listen further and realize he is on the one mundane topic that many a boring music today is about. Still, there are moments of spark herein, and I’ll say he did okay as he isn’t a super hit maker”

This Yung John production is great but it is only marginally impressive what Steel does on it.

There are several areas the man could have raised the bar on this one, but the music fails to hit a major crescendo. I mean, looking from the standpoint of what’s obtainable today, this one is probably not going to leave any particularly lasting impression of sorts. But let’s see, who knows?

sexy-steel

There are no major themes on this, just talks of the female body and sex allusions. The opening minute where he goes “if you give me your love, I go show you my heart…” misleads us and we expect that this is a eulogy of the one dear female in his life; the one female the singer wants to eulogize. But we listen further and realize he is on the one mundane topic that is what many a boring music today is about – Sex, ‘booty’, liquor and whatnot. Tsk.

Still, in fairness to Steel, there are a few moments of spark and animation herein; and I will say he did massive seeing as he isn’t a super hit maker per se. Which means for an artiste in his mould, this should pass for an okay effort, even though miles away from hotshot industry records of today.

Listen and rate, a Hit or a Miss?

Music Review: “Promise” By Godwyn Ft. Di’ja – Double Dose Of Sweetness

$

Godwyn-Dija

“Di’ja is first-rate on here, but for everything she does Godwyn fails to let his guest take any more shine than him. He is deep, effortless and music-ready.”

There isn’t much to say on this new Godwyn-Di’ja effort. There are so many phrases that summarize their performance on the cut – From masterful to deft, formidable, deft and dexterous.

For a fairly new artiste, Di’ja is on some galactic cruise. We love. And we hope she stays the course. It’s harder maintaining the top spot, yknow.

Godwyn-Dija

She is first-rate on here, but for everything she does Godwyn fails to let his guest take any more shine than him. He is deep, effortless and music-ready.

The production of this is heavenly, with the least instrumentation possible; and there are moments where the song cascades like some Opera-spoken words type delivery and we sway to its slow rhythm in euphoric gladness. I loooooooooooooove how Di’ja laces her voice over the closing parts of this, the 02:49 – 51 marks precisely. Immaculate!

Jazzy is on virtuoso mode – You think he’s done getting better then he takes a deep breath and propels like a charged bull. You listen to this and see a man who burns the night oil in sharpening his craft, in readiness for an Industry takeover, some Messi-Ronaldo, El Classico type preparedness; it’s a problem.

We already rated – This is clear-cut timeless. End.

Music Review: “Big Mistake” By KSwitch Is Two Steps Behind Where We Are Today

$

Big mistake

“A part of me thinks this KSwitch effort was a hasty one. Though not an A-list guy as such, we still expect some real good stuff given his skills.”

A part of me thinks this KSwitch effort was a hasty one, a song hurriedly done against the backdrop of a lazy weekend binge and some studio catch ups.

Fairly disappointed at ‘Big Mistake’ seeing as Sister Caro and Obimo were stellar in their own rights. Both joints were banging, and so it shocks us how much Switch has fallen off that peak point. The production of this is too weak. It has Deevee on retrospect mode, a move he fails to adequately execute.

Big mistake

Though not an A-list guy as such, we still expect some real good stuff from Mr. Switch, given his skills. In fact, some circles still hold that he is the more talented of the Oyebanjo brothers, seeing as he can switch into the Jamaican, conscious music frame.

In any case, it KSwitch is my guy any day. I look to hearing from him on a more radio-worthy level; his music that is. And if you ask me, it appears we are close to getting back to where we used to be with the man and his music. And so I would like to see, given we have gotten a single in the first quarter, his music get on some acclaimed status, even though the man isn’t exactly in any pursuit of fame or fortune.

Listen and rate, a Hit or a Miss?

EXCLUSIVE! Watch As AQ Airs His Views On The “Local Rappers” Track

Rapper A-Q sure isn’t done venting about what he thinks of Reminisce’s “Local Rappers”. In case you haven’t followed the discourse, he recently dropped a diss song which we reviewed here.

Following that, he has gone ahead to air his views on the “Local Rappers” track by Reminisce, Olamide and Phyno.

AQ talks to Nigezie exclusively about the situation and the reasons he replied all three rappers on the “Local Rappers” track.

Watch video below –

Reminisce Defends His ‘Local Rappers’ In Twitter Rant

$
0
0

Reminisce‘s latest hit Local Rappers on which he featured Phyno and Olamide seems to have raised quite some dust. The rapper, however, seems to have gotten fed up with all the upheaval surrounding the song and his indigenous style of rap as he went on a Twitter rant to clear the air.

He demanded an answer for the backlash seeing as – in a previous song with Modenine – he had used the lines ‘Oyi Rappers’ and there was no controversy.

His currently buzzing Local Rappers single has been criticized, however, by some who felt the song has tendencies to downplay the relevance of wordplay and intelligence in Nigerian hip hop. Although we don’t quite agree with those persons.

Reminisce switched up his rant as he said people are scared and angry because indigenous rap is gaining ground as opposed to westernized forms of the art down here in Nigeria, which was previously the norm.

He reiterated that he has no problem with ‘English Rappers’ and the collaborations he has done with them show this.

He finished his rant by challenging anyone having a problem with him to step out and say it plainly.

His friend and collaborator, Olamide, also tweeted that everybody is allowed to do any form of music and that differences in style should not lead to hate; a tweet Reminisce supported with a retweet.

Lil Wayne-Birdman Face Off, What Is Left Of The Empire

$

Yesterday, we reported the case of the obvious rift in Cash Money. We have watched as activities slumped in the label from December last year when Lil Wayne rounded off work on his “Carter V” album and the label –Cash Money Records– refused to put out the project, nor pay him a $10M fee as agreed.

The aftermath of that is a messy lawsuit in which Wayne has sued the label to the tune of $51M for what he termed a “prison sentence”, stating that Birdman and Cash Money Records have “refused to release his Carter V album”. According to TMZ, Wayne is pressing charges with the hopes of severing his contract with the label.

This has been the situation, a messy one at that, but what is even messier is the fact of a likely “extinction” of Cash Money if Wayne and his cohorts (Drake and Nicki Minaj) were to leave. Already, we hear Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” is the last string contractually binding him and Cash Money, which makes it all the more likely he will leave as well.

Anyways, today we take a quick look at what is left of Cash Money in the event Wayne’s exit becomes official.

As we speak, there are five major namees on the label – Ace Hood, Bow Wow, Austin Mahone, Limp Bizkit and Birdman (the head honcho). But there are speculations they aren’t enough arsenal to keep the label firing high.

Ace Hood is perhaps the biggest name left on the imprint if things go as speculated with Wayne’s purported exit. Signed to YMCMB in 2012, Birdman said of him to MTV News:

“When you got a young man with that kind of focus, you never know how far he can go in this business”.

The official announcement was made to MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway on the set of DJ Khaled’s “Take It To The Head” video shoot.

“We wanted to do it right, set it up right. I think Ace Hood is a superstar. I love his work ethic, I think he’s a very talented young man…”, Baby told MTV News.

Ace remains the best option Cash Money has of staying afloat. His “Bugatti” single perhaps is the most commercially rewarding from the label in recent times (if we take away Wayne and his unit, that is).

Next up is Bow Wow but we aren’t exactly sure of him lasting on the charts today, neither are we sure of him resounding in the markets. He’s spent the last few years shuttling between Hollywood and everything else there is in a bid to generate himself some buzz, but zilch. His next big project “Underrated” isn’t making any serious noise with singles, neither is the label ready to cut the big cheque for some banging PR, not with Birdman’s monopoly and his penchant to drive the Bugatti.

Austin Mahone is probably just going to add to the numbers and fizzle out before long. Only time will tell. Not to be pessimistic or nothing but the teenager hasn’t particularly done anything that should serve as an anchor were the label to rely on his creativity to stay in business tomorrow. But we watch, who knows how things could go?

Who is Limp Bizkit? From Interscope to Cash Money Records, we watched the horrendous mismatch that was their partnership and today we are still watching. In 2012, when Cash Money signed Limp Bizkit, Rolling Stone defined the public’s reaction as ‘ranging from confused to abhorred’. Following that, Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams quickly downplayed any regret whatsoever over the signing:

“Everybody gonna have their opinion, but we don’t even listen to that. We been through this long enough not to pay attention to the negativity. We’re just gonna let the music speak for itself.”

Nearly three years down the line, nothing major has been heard from the band, Limp Bizkit. Nothing. The only thing we hear is silence, silence so loud we know better than to expect anything ground breaking from the partnership.

Birdman is, today, musically out of tune with the trend of things. And in all sincerity, it’ll be easier for money to grow on trees than for him to drop a song or album today and have it buzz across platforms. He is not the answer to Cash Money’s problems, he is no answer to anything; in fact he owes Cash Money and the world answers.

These said, we don’t see the slightest chance that Cash Money and it’s commodities will see the light of day, at least not with rumors of Tyga also wanting out as he looks to buy off the rest of his pact with the label. Most especially, not with Wayne and his gang out of the equation. But we watch still.

Music Review: Wizzy Pro’s “Finally” Is Too Pedestrian, Too Ordinary To Get Us Bumping

$
0
0

The track boasts production from Wizzy Pro, and together with Runtown what we have is the reggae-influenced “Finally”.

I want write something in the line of “the song is jamming, well-crafted and radio-fitting; a hit with chart potentials and all”, but there’s not enough motivation in it for us to rate it thus. The sounds are too pedestrian, too ordinary to get us nodding. We love the Wizzy-Run chemistry on tracks but this one doesn’t deliver the goods.

All things being equal, we’d prefer Wizzy didn’t join the dwindling band of mediocre guys out there today. We’d prefer he took his time and constructively perfected his art on a piece before serving. It’s only natural, not when there are a myriad of other options.

In sum, there are no real banging beats on “Finally”, nothing of inventiveness or color or lyrical depth, just some mid ‘90s, reggae-influenced whatchamacallit that doesn’t exactly serve its purpose (in my opinion).

Listen and rate, a Hit or a Miss?

Dear Artist: Who Are You?

$
0
0

Have you ever loved a song so much, you get disappointed when you eventually have an image of the artist behind the song? I know i have! Quite a number of times by many Nigerian artists who shall not be named, because..well it’s a new year! *sips tea*.

A lot of artists i have come across (i should probably start name dropping here..*Kanye shrug*) have no identity at all..I hear their music, see them and i find myself looking to the sky wondering how on earth such person thinks a music career is the right choice for him/her.

In this age of social media for an artist, your brand probably has a lot more influence on your fans than your music does..i have had conversations with a lot of RiRi fans who actually don’t like her music, but just love her style;brand!. Your brand separates you from every Tom, Dick and Harry Tochuckwu,Deji and Haruna out there jumping around with a Mic.

Branding speaks volumes and it goes a long way in keeping an artist in the limelight, getting an artist endorsement deals well, that’s how it should be, but the endorsement deals in Naija these days…lips sealed and what not. When you think branding for an artist, think Jay Z! Then this write up will definitely make more sense to you especially if you are an artist.

Before i go on blabbing, let me address the issue here and give my professional (yes! Professional..lol) advice on branding and what it means for an artist.

First things first, the important step after your decision to pursue a music career is to understand who you are as a person, and how this identifies with your music. These two aspects have to be merged, for instance, if you are an ‘agbero’ looking to be an RnB artist? Fine! Look for a way to merge this, you just might be the pioneer of something new (Disclaimer: this is at your own risk.Lmao). A lot of times, i have seen talented artists with brands that are detached from their music and so they spend forever trying to get out of the ‘Next Rated’ zone..sigh!.

Second! Surround yourself with a professional team; this includes your manager, publicist, stylist et al. One important thing to note when choosing a team though, is to make sure you get professionals who have the requisite knowledge for the job. Especially with publicists, don’t just go for social media hype men with no solid PR or crisis management background. Work with a publicist who knows what it means to create a brand that depicts who you are, your music and most importantly, knows how to sell that brand to your fans.

Finally, your brand is nothing if you lack confidence! In other words, if you don’t believe in your brand or are not comfortable with it, it really won’t work. YOU make the brand so you need to have the right attitude for it, as the popular saying goes ‘you cannot give what you don’t have’.

As a side note; I am however, not encouraging artists to focus all their energy on branding and neglect the music like Eja Nla he who shall not be named. *hehe*. So before i drop my pen, dear artist, who are you?

If there is anything Olisa Aduba’s The Truth is about, it is that it goes in deep.

There are no shallow talks, no discussions without the real deal coming out.

And that is what he has done with this new episode of The Truth where he interviews YBNL boss and rapper, Olamide.

Olamide discusses his baby mama, respecting Dagrin and why he has not worked with his mentor, ID Cabasa.

On why he uses  the acronym YBNL

i picked up the slang from the hood, the slang simply means like a young boy making money, looking fresh without doing illegal business. If you fly like that in the hood, they call you Yahoo Boy No Laptop.

On why he hasn’t worked with ID Cabasa

He never treated me like a (studio) rat though… ID Cabasa picked me up from the streets… he’s been so so supportive even as Olamide no dey with ID Cabasa again, he still keeps in touch… it’s more than a brotherly thingy right now, he is more like my Dad in the Industry.

I really wanna work with Cabasa but you know I’m always on the road, I am always on the move…

Watch the rest of the interesting interview below and catch the Rap star talk about why he has not married his baby mama and what he honestly thinks about Dagrin, Eedris Abdulkareem and the other rappers that came before him.

360Chat: Meet One Mic Naija #MusicDecides Performer “Aramide”

One Mic Naija #MusicDecides edition holds this Sunday at Ember Creek and 360Nobs is going behind the scenes with the performers. We kicked our 3 questions off with Isaac Geralds and today, it’s all about newly married, Aramide .
#OneMicNaija Aramide

Hi Aramide! You got married on Saturday, April 18th. What’s being a newly wed like?

It’s exciting and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it to be honest. I’m settling in as each day comes and its been amazing. I’m really excited to be married to my best friend and its the best feeling ever.

Now we know you are used to a more acoustic and perhaps smaller set up when you perform live. What’s performing with a full band like?

To me the difference Is that this time around the sound will be fuller which is always better. One Mic Naija is a great platform that I will say exposed me to the experience of performing with a full band.

The line up for this edition is so impressive! Which of the other artistes on the bill would you want to work with?

It’s a very interesting one this month and I’m happy to be a part of it. I’d love to work with Isaac. He is an amazing person and artist and also Simi. She is a very talented songwriter and singer too. Sure we can join forces together.

Looks like we might be getting an Aramide / Simi or Aramide / Isaac Geralds song soon! *fingers crossed*

See Aramide, AKA, Brymo, Adekunle Gold, Mr 2Kay, Isaac Geralds and Simi live on Sunday April 26th at Ember Creek Awolowo Road.
