360FlashbackFriday

Flashback Friday, is here and is focused on bringing back or rather revamping some old memories of  some songs/videos which almost all of us once listened to, partied to and loved.

Last week on #Flashbackfriday was Delimma by Nelly and Olufumi by Style-plus. While today, the first song on Throughback friday is:

Akon – LONELY

Lonely” (also known as “Mr. Lonely”) is a single by Senegalese- American R&B and  hip hop singer Akon; it appears on his debut album, Trouble.

The single was  released in 2005 and was his  first world wide hit. It  reached number one in several  countries, including in the United Kingdom and Germany (where it stayed there for eight weeks), and Australia.

It was also highly popular in  France where it reached number two, and in the United States when it peaked at #4.

Eddris abdukareem – Jaga jaga

In 2004, Abdulkareem’s third album, Jaga Jaga, appeared on Kennis. Its title track, which laments the corruption and suffering in Nigeria.

It was banned from radio airplay by Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo in a televised address, although it continued to be played in nightclubs.

unplugged

Last night, Brixton’s O2 Academy was host to thr much anticipated Africa Unplugged concert. As I’m sure you can imagine, it didn’t go on without its glitches. However,  the redemption came from the two headlining acts, Nigerian Superstars Tiwa Savage and Davido.

Tiwa Savage’s performance was out of this world. She gave a performance that can easily be held on the same calibre as Beyoncé.

Her intro to the stage was well choreographed with the support of the ever talented CEO dancers and their crew. She sang most of her hit songs during her set, which also included a tribute to deceased popular Africans such as Goldie, Nelson Mandela, Dagrin amongst a host of inspirational Nigerian entertainers who have left us. To say that everything was on point,  from Tiwa’s stage presence, performance and costume, is an understatement.

Davido and his gang performed his ever growing list of hit songs that had the crowd chanting “DA-VI-DO, DA-VI-DO”.

Having already received a warm reception from the London crowd during his concert last year, it was no surprise that Davido would come and give the people what they want for a second time. Now with a longer list of hits, his high energy and live band proved once again why he has been sweeping every award cermony he has been nominated in this season, further solidifying the fact that  Davido isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Tiwa and Davido gave strong examples of the kind of first class preparation from Africa artists and attention to small details that the fans want.

Kudos to organisers of Africa unplugged, despite some few lapses, they should be given a standing ovation for putting this together. You can see that there was lots of effort that went into the stage performance.

The time of African artists coming on stage and putting little to no effort whatsoever is dead and gone. Davido and Tiwa have set the bench mark for others to follow

STARBOY WIZZY: The Baddest Boy Wizkid ‘AYO’ Stuns London with an Electrifying Show (Pictures)

Wizkid concert_Michael Tubes_360nobs

Following his successful Hammersmith Apollo gig in 2012, Wizkid took to the stage again to wow his London fans. This time in North Greenwich’s Indigo2.

Smade once again pulled off a one of a kind sold out show. Host, Eddie Kadi kept the crowd laughing as Wizkid fans began to fill the Indigo2 space. Opening act, Sona warmed up the crowd and got them dancing with his breakout hits ‘Ijo Sona’, ‘Omode Yi’ and ‘No Wahala’.

Once the crowd was buzzing it was time for none other than the man the people had all been waiting for to grace the stage. Backed up by The Composers and the D3 Dancers, Wizkid hit the stage with a bang. If there was any question as to what the young superstar was going to perform being that a majority of his hits have come from collaborations over the past year or so, tonight proved that despite this fact the star is a force to be reckoned with.

Wizkid performed a string of his hits from ‘Don’t Dull’, the crowd pleasing ‘No Lele’ and the now classic ‘Tease Me/Bad Guy’, to his latest hits ‘On Top You Matter’ and ‘Jaiye Jaiye’. Wizkid even performed songs from his latest album ‘Ayo’, such as ‘Ojuelegba’ as the crowd sang along to every word.

The show wouldn’t have been complete without his collabos which included ‘Back To The Matter’, ‘Caro’ and ‘Emi Ni Baller’ to which Chidinma,  Maleek Berry and L.A.X respectively joined Wizkid on stage to screams and cheers from the crowd.

Also in attendance tonight were some of the UK’s very own shining stars such as Tinie Tempah, Tinchy Stryder, DJ Abrantee and Krept and Konan who joined Wizkid on stage to close out the show with his mega hit single ‘Show You The Money’ as Wizkid so generously sprayed the crowd with $100 bills.

All in all, it was a night not to have been missed. Wizkid showed London that he has come a mighty long way from his ‘Holla at your Boy’ days. Despite the fact that he missed out some hits during the show, with three costume changes and a catalogue of music that had the crowd dancing from beginning to end, it was easy to forget the songs that weren’t performed.

One final word of advise, if you ever hear Wizkid is coming to a city near you, don’t miss it!

The five regions of Africa gave an impressive account of their respective music industry as the 2014 Nominees’ List of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, was unveiled today, September 23, 2014 during a world press conference held at Protea Hotel Leadway, Maryland Estate, Lagos, Nigeria.

Present for the AFRIMA Panel of Jurors at the unveiling event was jury member Mr. Oscar Kidjo, a seasoned music producer, representing West Africa (Benin Republic). Also representing the International Committee of AFRIMA were: Executive Producer/President, Mike Dada; Director Brand Communication & Sponsorship, Matlou Tsotetsi; Chairman, International Media Committee, Steve Ayorinde and Co-Producer/Country Director, Nigeria, Kingsley James. Other attendees included African music industry personalities, heads of partner corporate organisations and music industry stakeholders.

Although popular names in the continental music industry showed up on the highly-anticipated Nominees’ List of the awards project that is rewarding excellence by budding and established music professionals as well as journalists, the nominations of a generous number of emerging African artistes in many award categories threw more excitement into the unveiling event witnessed by local and international press as well as critical stakeholders in the music industry.

Among the well-known African music names on the nominees list are: Mafikizolo (South Africa) 6 nominations, Davido (Nigeria) 6 nominations, Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania) 2 nominations, Amr Diab (Egypt) 2 nominations, Zahara (South Africa) 3 nominations, Angelique Kidjo (Benin Republic) 2 nominations, Fally Ipupa (DRC) 1 nomination, Sakordie (Ghana) 1 nomination, Tiwa Savage (Nigeria) 2 nominations, Uhuru (South Africa) 5 nominations and Mi Casa (South Africa) 4 nominations. Leading the budding music acts on AFRIMA Nominees’ List is: TemiDollFace (Nigeria) 4 nominations, others are Wiyaala (Ghana) 3 nominations; Patoranking (Nigeria) 2 nominations; Davina Green (Zimbabwe) 1 nomination and Noura Mint Seymale (Mauritania) 2 nominations, among others.

Heavyweight African music producer, Don Jazzy (Nigeria) made the Africa Producer of the Year category for the song ‘Eminado’ alongside top contenders: Robbie Malinga & Mojela Thebe (South Africa) for ‘Impilo’; Oskido and Shizzi (Nigeria) for ‘Tchelete’; Mikky Me (Nigeria) ‘Down’ and Del’B (Nigeria) for ‘Pull Over’.

Giving details into the criteria by which the nominees list emerged, Matlou Tsotetsi explained that the jury panel adhered strictly to the entry submission requirements while being guided by AFRIMA’s core values of FACE IT –Fairness, Authenticity, Creativity, Excellence, Integrity and Transparency. “The adjudication panel of jurors consisting of experienced names in the continental and global music industry were in Lagos in July to evaluate the submitted works. The entries, which made the laid down criteria and qualified on merit, were shortlisted, based on their scores and this was sent to our regional officials in Kenya who then tabulated these scores. The result is what we are presenting today”, Ms. Tsotetsi stated.

While 31 of the 33 award categories will be open for voting by the public and AFRIMA Academy of Voters, Mike Dada revealed that recipients of the AFRIMA Legend Award and the Africa Entertainment/Music Journalist Award will be decided by the International Committee of AFRIMA and announced at the main awards ceremony on Sunday, November 9, 2014.

Mike Dada said further that the AFRIMA voting online platform will open on Tuesday, September 30 for the five-week voting process, while encouraging the public, fans and followers of African music to visit the AFRIMA website,  www.afrima.org , to view the nominees in the 30 categories of the award and vote for their favourite artiste (s).

For the 2014 edition, the award project opened entries on May 15 and closed the submission of entries on July 21 in the process receiving a staggering total of 2,025 works for assessment submitted by African music industry artistes, professionals and journalists.

The AFRIMA Jury, made up of seasoned African industry practitioners, were in Lagos, Nigeria, between July 31 to August 6 for the week-long adjudication of entries from artistes, songwriters, video directors, producers as well as journalists. In addition to Oscar Kidjo, the other jury members include: Kawesa Richard (Uganda) Eastern Africa; Tabu Osusa (Kenya) Eastern Africa; Laolu Akintobi (Nigeria) Western Africa; Robert Esong Ekukole (Cameroon), Central Africa; Kiki Toure (Equatorial Guinea) Central Africa; Delani Makhalima (Zimababwe) Southern Africa; Chris Syren (South Africa) Southern Africa; Angela Martins African Union Commission; Rab Bakari (USA) Diaspora and Rita Ray (UK), Diaspora. The result of the Jury’s work and the thorough collation by AFRIMA’s Kenya-based internal auditors has produced the AFRIMA 2014 Nominees’ List.

Nominees are vying for the coveted AFRIMA trophy in 33 categories divided into the regional and continental categories and including the AFRIMA Legend Award –a honour for a great African who has contributed immensely to the advancement of African music, the creative sector in general and impacted on the positive image of the continent and its global reckoning.

SO BEAUTIFUL: Asa performs in a rare one-off concert in London’s Union Chapel (Photos)

Asa in concert_pictures_Bed of Stone_2014_360nobs

If you weren’t(specifically London folks)at Union Chapel on Thursday 2nd October 2014 then you seriously missed out on one of the best shows of the year.

Internationally acclaimed Nigerian musician, Asa, sang her heart out in Union Chapel for an extremely rare London concert last night. For a show that was long overdue it was far from disappointing.  Hitting the stage at 8:45pm on the dot wearing a beautiful dazzling playsuit, her signature dreads cut in a flattering bob style and funky fresh glasses, Asa looked stunning.

Starting with her now classic hit single “Fire on the Mountain”, Asa took the crowd on an emotional roller coaster that had everyone clapping, singing and dancing from beginning to end. She performed her hits from “Bibanke”, to “So Beautiful”, “Be My Man” and “Bamidele”.

With her amazing band to back her up, Asa gave the crowd what they had been longing for, nothing but real music. The show was no where near over when Asa was hailed with a standing ovation and high pitches cheers from the crowd.

This show was not lacking anything in any form or fashion. At an early point during the show Asa took off her shoes so that she could be free to express her music to her adoring fans. Asa even proved herself to be an instrumentalist of sorts as she pulled out a trumpet during the show to play. The show was nothing short of epic.

If you’re a real music fan and you missed this show, you missed a show of a lifetime. Only God knows when Asa will be back to grace a London stage. Check out all the pictures below.

Sean Tizzle hosted an invitation only album listening party for His London  fans on Tuesday 7th October 2014 in the heart of London.

The album, which was released in Nigeria in May, was played in full. The “Sho Le” singer sat and explained track by track the significance of the songs and how they came together.

Wise Tola and Toya Washington(Former Big Brother UK Contestant)  were the hosts for the evening, while UK Afrobeats stars Vicky Solar and Moelogo were in attendance. Alongside Ben TV’s Magazine show host Femi and a host of other celebs,  fans and we’ll wishers.

The album listening party was in anticipation for his second live concert in the UK since his emergence into the world of Afropop, you can view pictures from his previous concert at the IndigoO2 here. This event was put together by Adesope (Factory78 and vox africa). The pouring rain on the night of the 30th of September 2014 did little to stop the crowd that thronged the Landmark events centre, Victoria Island to witness electrifying performances by Nigeria’s biggest stars on the same stage.

The Tripple Nine concert, one of the biggest concerts of 2014 was held to commemorate the 5th anniversary of top Lagos radio station the Beat 99.9 fm, was headlined by South Africa’s darling group Mi Casa, who put up a scintillating performance.

The groups’ lead singer J’something left the audience impressed with his vocal dexterity while his band mates showed off their skills on the musical instruments afterwards, leaving the crowd yearning for more.

Also sharing the Live stage on the night was Kennis Music act Joe El who rendered his popular single “you’re in love” much to the delight of the ladies. Multi talented act Sound Sultan brought his smile, his A-game as well as his Naija Ninja crew to the fore – captivating the audience with ease.

Yemi Alade was definitely a force to reckon with as many swore they never knew she was that much a performer. The “Johnny” singer hit the high notes excellently while defending her self-styled King of Queens moniker with impressive dance moves – all on high heels!

Fans of Omawunmi were not disappointed either as the songstress, dressed in a cute Cinderella-like mini gown, delivered as promised.

Sonorous diva Waje hypnotized the crowd with a soulful rendition of her single “no be you” off her self-titled album, while also debuting the video to the song.

Controversy aside, Tiwa Savage who had recently been dogged with rumours of a rift with her hubby and manager, gave a stunning performance alongside her sexy looking dancers, while reeling out a medley of her hits. She was afterwards joined on stage by some of her Mavin label mates to perform the monster hit “Dorobuchi”.

The guys were not left out as fans enjoyed memorable performances by Dammy Krane, Ill bliss, Timi Dakolo, Burna Boy and 2face Idibia, while an obviously moved M.I who stood in disbelief at the passion and frenzy being experienced from the crowd as he performed his past hits, dramatically knelt on stage to plead with fans for being away for too long.

Fans will also remember the flawless dance moves of P-square and their dance group as they performed hot tracks off their latest album for the first time in Nigeria. Their performance was almost “flawed” by a freak accident after one of the twins lost footing and fell off the stage. He was however back on his feet in a minute and the band completed the set like professionals.

Music lovers were also entertained by music mixes from the turntables of Dj Spin all, Dj Lambo, Cool Dj Jimmy Jatt, Dj Neptune and Dj Caise.

On air personalities of the Beat 99.9 also came out on stage to thank fans and listeners for tuning in and being there all along.

Mobo Awards 2014_360nobs

On the 22nd of October,  UK’s most prestigious awards for Music of Black Origin (MOBOs) took place at London’s Wembley Arena.  Winning the most awards was (a total of four including Best Album, Best Song, Best Male Act) Sam Smith, who has had a tremendous year so far with his hit single ‘Stay With Me’ from his debut album In The Lonley Hour.  Coming home to Africa, the nominees were Afrikan Boy, Davido, DJ Clock, Dr Sid, Fuse ODG, Mafikozolo, Mista Silva, Tiwa Savage, Wiz Kid, Yemi Alade (great acknowledgement for the Johnny crooner) with Fuse ODG winning again this year. Here are some of the pictures from the red carpet – Eve, Emma Nyra and Ubi Franklin, David Hayes, Tinnie Tempah, Jessie J and many more.

Outstanding style on the red carpet goes to British singer, Jessie J in her sparkly jumpsuit a nod to disco divas in the 80s, who also picked up an award for the best female act and opened the evening with a sexy performance of her new single ‘Bang Bang’.   Emma Nyra’s took a page out of the goth book for her make up with a new hair do – short bob in black wearing underwear lace corset as an outerwear – its a mixed reaction for her look. Anyway, enjoy the red carpet looks and tell us what you think.

#MAVIN UK Concert: Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Di’Ja at Indigo02 (Amazing photos)

Mavin UK Tour_Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, Don Jazzy, Dr Sid, Reekado Banks_360nobs

The concert of the year took place on Thursday 23rd October 2014 at London’s Indigo2 in North Greenwich.  The Mavin All Stars (D’prince couldn’t make it) took to the stage for their highly anticipated show.

Despite a few minor glitches and mixed emotions from the crowd throughout the show, the all star crew still managed to pull together an electrifying show. Everything from the stage set up to the lighting and the non – stop flow of hits all worked together to keep the crowd’s eyes glued to the stage.

The show was hosted by ‘Don’t Jealous Me’ who did a good job of trying to keep a half dead crowd entertained. The show that was put together by Akinlolu Jekins, ASMG & Mr White Ent and project managed by Michael Tubes Creations took it’s time to fly off the ground. Once the opening acts (which included Tillaman) were done,  Mavin Queen Tiwa Savage hit the stage first to get the show on the road. Tiwa sang and danced her heart out as the audience sang ans danced along with her. She then introduced DR. SID to the stage with a fabulous rendition of Dr. Dre’s ‘I Need A Doctor’ that had the crowd mesmerised.

Once Dr.Sid hit the stage, it was as if he was determined to leave the crowd wanting more.  Every song he performed was a remix that felt specially put together for the London crowd to enjoy. He really surprised the crowd with his amazing energy and infectious music that had everyone from the floor to the balcony rocking their body.

Dr.Sid ended his set by picking up a guitar as if to serenade the crowd, only to strike all the strings at once. With this he introduced the one and only African Prince, Korede Bello.

When Korede hit the stage he straight away took the guitar and gave a short and sweet rendition of Sam Smith’s hit song ‘Stay With Me’ that was so good that even Sam Smith himself would have heard it and asked for Korede to jump on the remix. Korede didn’t stop there. He went on to perform his beautiful hit song ‘Cold Outside’  as he danced and enjoyed the love from the crowd.

Reekado Banks hit the stage next and got the crowd turned up as he performed his club bangers ‘Turn It Up’ with Tiwa as well as, ‘Chop Am’.

The Mavin princess D’ija also graced the stage as she performed her infectiously funky single ‘Yaro’ that had the non-Hausa speaking crowd members wishing they could understand the language and sing the song with as much passion as she did.

Don Jazzy also managed to make a few performances throughout the show to support his crew. However he was more of a proud father allowing his children to get their shine and give the people what they want. And what they wanted were the hits.

The show ended in the only way imaginable and that was with the crew coming together to perform their mega hit ‘Dorobucci’. At this point there wasn’t a still body in the house. Everyone was up on their feet dancing, singing and having the time of their lives.

If you  were in London and thought the show was dry, could have been better or the best show this year, it is certainly a show you won’t forget. Check out all the performance pictures below.  Feel the MAVIN experience.  Lagos, you are next.
